• Application Phase
    February 15 – March 29, 2017

Applicants create, complete and submit an Application through the online portal – including their past accomplishments achieved through big ideas and an Even Bigger Idea® on how to mitigate climate change by expanding the use of compost.

Application submission opens on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 11 am Eastern Time and closes on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 11 am Eastern Time or when 200 qualified applications have been received, whichever comes first.

  • Initial Committee Review
    February 16 – May 22, 2017

The Committee reviews all completed submissions and selects up to ten Applications to advance that best demonstrate the Applicant’s ability to: 1) devise and deliver great ideas, and 2) develop a thoughtful, well‐conceived Even Bigger Idea® with potential for significant impact on the “Mitigating Climate Change by Expanding the Use of Compost” objective.

  • Confidentiality & Conflict Disclosure Agreement Certification
    May 23 – June 1, 2017

Applicants selected to advance to the Peer Review Phase sign a Confidentiality & Conflict Disclosure Agreement. The Rathmann Challenge Peer Review Phase is designed in the spirit of collaboration and a signed agreement is required to participate. A copy of the agreement is available upon request.

  • Peer Review
    June 2 – July 13, 2017

Applicants who have completed the Confidentiality & Conflict Disclosure Agreement Certification Phase advance to the Peer Review Phase. “Peer Reviewers” then review and share sector knowledge through candid, practical comments on the Applications of fellow Peer Reviewers. Each Peer Reviewer is charged with providing thoughtful, detailed, and constructive comments on two Applications they on balance feel have merit and two Applications they on balance feel do not have merit. The comments are submitted online over a 30 day period.

  • Peer Review Response
    July 14 – July 28, 2017

Comments are compiled, reviewed, anonymized and redacted to protect the identity of the Peer Reviewer, and then shared with the Applicant for response. We may withhold comments that we deem are not consistent with the spirit of the Rathmann Challenge. Peer Reviewers are provided 15 days in which to prepare their responses to fellow Peer Reviewer comments.

  • Intermediate Committee Review
    July 29 – August 15, 2017

Peer review comments and responses are compiled for each Application. The Committee reviews and takes into consideration the content and substance of the Peer Reviewer’s comments and analysis. The depth, detail, and usefulness of comments on fellow Peer Reviewers Applications will serve as strong support for the Peer Reviewer’s own Application.

Initial Committee Review Phase results are combined and weighed with the Intermediate Committee Review Phase results and those Peer Reviewers who have met all requirements and presented consistently exceptional work throughout advance to the Due Diligence & Final Committee Review Phase. The Committee may choose to advance some or all of the Peer Reviewers to the Due Diligence & Final Committee Review Phase.

All Peer Reviewers are notified as to the Committee’s decision. Regardless of advancement, Peer Reviewers receive all constructive comments related to their Application.

  • Due Diligence & Final Committee Review
    August 16 – October 11, 2017

Extensive due diligence on each Peer Reviewer Application is conducted. Site visits may be conducted for some Peer Reviewers, as well as additional inquiries put forth by our staff or representatives. The Committee further reviews and conducts follow ups as needed in preparation for the Finalist Phase. A minimum of three applications which best exemplify the objectives and criteria identified throughout the Application & Peer Review Process to date are deemed "Finalists"" and advanced in hierarchical order to the Finalist Phase.

  • Finalist Phase
    October 12 – October 31, 2017

All Finalists are invited to submit a funding request to the Rathmann Family Foundation. Awards may only be given to those Finalists who submit a funding request and sign the funding agreement. A copy of the funding agreement is available upon request.
